If you’re in Canberra for government business, a conference or a family visit and find yourself with a spare afternoon, the capital has some genuinely well-known attractions close by — worth knowing about even if sightseeing isn’t the main reason for your trip.

Parliament House is one of the more obvious ones, and it’s worth knowing you can visit without needing tickets booked well in advance for a general look through — a reasonable option if a meeting finishes early or you’ve got a gap before your next commitment.

The Australian War Memorial is another that’s genuinely significant rather than just a tourist stop, and it’s close enough to fit into an afternoon without needing to build a whole day around it. If you’re travelling with family and want something that works for a range of ages, it’s a reasonable choice.

The National Museum of Australia and Questacon both offer a few hours’ worth of content if you’ve got more time — better suited to a proper half-day than squeezing in between meetings, but worth knowing about if your schedule allows for it.

Lake Burley Griffin has walking and cycling trails around it if you’d rather be outside than in a museum — a good option for clearing your head between conference sessions or after a day of meetings, and it doesn’t require any planning beyond turning up.

For anyone here on government or defence business with limited free time, it’s worth being realistic about what you can actually fit in — Parliament House or a walk around the lake are the more achievable options for a genuinely spare hour, while the National Museum and Questacon are better saved for a day when you’ve got more time to give them properly.

None of this is the reason most guests book Canberra Holiday Village — you’re likely here for work, a conference, sport or family. But if a gap does open up, these are the options worth knowing about, roughly in order of how much time each genuinely needs.

The takeaway: Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin work well for a spare hour or two, while the National Museum and Questacon are worth saving for when you’ve got a proper afternoon free.
